Urgent Action: Youth activist has been imprisoned for criticizing a trial. Angolan youth activist Francisco Mapanda was arrested for stating 'the trial was a farce' during the sentencing of 17 Angolan youth activists.
The judge immediately opened a separate proceeding against him and convicted him of contempt of court (desacato) and sentenced him to eight months in prison on the same day, 28 March.
The 17 young activists were conditionally released at the end of June and early July. They had been imprisoned for attending a meeting to discuss politics and governance concerns in the country.
However, Franciso Mapanda remains in prison.
Amnesty International considers Francisco Mapanda a prisoner of conscience, convicted solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
Criticism of public institutions of all kinds, including judiciary bodies is a right.
